                 Using VED with a VT52 Compatible Terminal
                 =========================================

The command:
    LIB VT52;

will compile a file which sets up VED for a VT52 terminal. This command can
be put in your VEDINIT.P file if you regularly use a VT52.

There may be a saved image which can be run with the DCL command:
    $ POP11/VT52

Definition of 'DUMB VT52' terminal:
    no insert line,
    no delete line,
    no character insert,
    no character delete,
    no graphic characters,
    no special functions on numeric keypad,
    only three function keys GOLD KEY2 KEY3
        (There may be more function keys on some VDUs.)

                Mapping between characters and procedures
                =========================================
Control characters are mostly mapped onto edit functions. See HELP VEDKEYS

The GOLD key plays a special role, usually preceding another key. Similarly
    the <ESC> key.

Press GOLD twice to refresh the screen, in case it has got corrupted, e.g. by
broadcast messages.

Use of Command line:
-------------------
ENTER command: to get to command line and clear it, ready to give a
new command.
    Press the GOLD key then RETURN
OR
    Press the <ESC> key then "e"    (lower case)

REDO command: to redo the last command on command line:
    <ESC> key then RETURN

CHANGE MODE : to go to command line without altering, or to move
from command line back into file:
    <ESC> key then the 0 key.

MOVING CURSOR:
--------------
The four arrow keys move the cursor one space in the direction of the
    arrow.

LARGER MOVES:
There are four sorts of larger moves: to top or bottom of file, boundary
    of window (and scroll), quarter of a window, or word-left or word-right.

TOP OF FILE
    <ESC> then UP ARROW
END OF FILE
    <ESC> then DOWN ARROW

SCREEN UP - move cursor to top of window, or scroll if already there:
    GOLD then UP ARROW
SCREEN DOWN - move to bottom of window, or scroll if already there:
    GOLD then DOWN ARROW

SCREEN LEFT: move to left of screen (defined by VEDLEFTMARGIN)
    GOLD then LEFT ARROW
SCREEN RIGHT: move to end of line of text
    GOLD then RIGHT ARROW

NUMERIC KEYPAD:
Largeish movements in 8 directions are associated with <ESC> followed by
one of the keypad numbers 1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9

<ESC> 5 puts cursor in the middle of the line:

WORD MOVES
Usually a keypad will have a dot and a comma key. Preceded by <ESC> they will
    cause the cursor to move a word to left or to right.
    WORD LEFT   <ESC> ,     (alternatively <ESC> LEFT ARROW)
    WORD RIGHT  <ESC> .     (alternatively <ESC> RIGHT ARROW)

MARKING A RANGE
    MARKLO: mark beginning of range         KEY2
    MARKHI: mark end of range               KEY3
    MOVE MARKED RANGE after current line    <ESC> KEY2

INSERTING LINES
    LINE ABOVE: insert line above current line  GOLD KEY2
    LINE BELOW: insert line below current line  GOLD KEY3

DELETING TEXT
Various deletions are produced by GOLD followed by keypad key.
Top row deletes characters left of, under and right of cursor
    DELETE character to left            GOLD 7
    DELETE character under cursor       GOLD 8
    DELETE character to right of cursor GOLD 9
Second row deletes portion of line or whole line.
    DELETE line to left of cursor       GOLD 4
    DELETE whole line                   GOLD 5
    DELETE line to right of cursor      GOLD 6

    DELETE word to left                 GOLD ,
    DELETE word to right                GOLD .

POSITION STACK
Third row on keypad for stacking popping or exchanging positions
    PUSH current position onto stack            GOLD 1
    POP top of position stack                   GOLD 2
    EXCHANGE current position with top of stack GOLD 3

    Switch in and out of STATIC mode            ESC #
