Using VED with the DECwindows terminal emulator.

-- Introduction -------------------------------------------------------

DXTERM is the DECwindows VT320 terminal emulator. For best performance
with VED, you should run the emulator in either VT100 or VT300/7-bit
mode.

To configure VED to work with DXTERM, call the procedure

    veddxterm();

or (equivalently) give 'dxterm' as the argument to *VEDUSETERM:

    veduseterm('dxterm') -> ;

Placing either of these commands at the start of your "vedinit.p" file
will cause VED to configure itself for DXTERM automatically each time it
is invoked.

If you don't want to commit yourself to DXTERM every time, you can use
*VEDTERMINALSELECT to make VED query the terminal's answerback message;
just add the following lines to your "vedinit.p" file:

    if vedterminalselect then
        ['\^[[c'
            ['[?63;1;3;4;6;8;9;15;16;29c' 'dxterm']
            ^^vedterminalselect
        ] -> vedterminalselect;
    endif;

This will configure VED for DXTERM only if the terminal responds with
the correct identification string. To ensure that the terminal does send
the correct string you should select the "DECterm ID" option from the
terminal's "Customize/General..." menu.


-- Screen Handling ----------------------------------------------------

Once VED has been configured for DXTERM, it can automatically determine
the size of the terminal window and adjust its display parameters
accordingly. This is done each time VED is called from the POPLOG
top-level and (on UNIX systems) when re-entering VED after a suspend. If
the window size changes while editing, VED will not react immediately to
the change, but you can force the readjustment by calling the procedure

    vedxrefresh();

This is normally bound to the two-stroke function-key sequence

    PF1 PF1

(see below). Alternatively, you can go to the POPLOG top-level by doing

    <ENTER> pop

and then return straight away to VED; this has the same effect.


-- Function Keys ------------------------------------------------------

The DXTERM library assumes that the keyboard is configured as a
VT220-type keyboard, so the basic function key mappings are as described
in HELP * VT220KEYS. This key map can be displayed at any time by
pressing the grey "Help" key.

There are however two differences between the DXTERM keymap and the
standard VT220 keymap:

    (1) the key F11 generates a single "escape" (ESC) character, so the
        block of keys F11 - F14 has been reorganised as follows:

        The missing functions ("mark top file" and "mark end file") can
        be obtained with the commands:

            <ENTER> mbf
            <ENTER> mef

    (2) The double keystroke sequence

            PF1 PF1

        is mapped onto the procedure VEDXREFRESH rather than a plain
        refresh.

Note that to enable the grey function keys, you must be running the
terminal emulator in VT300 mode; in VT100 mode, only the application
keypad is available, although the bindings for the keypad keys are the
same in both cases.


-- Notes for Ultrix Users ---------------------------------------------

When using DXTERM to run a login shell, the TERM environment variable is
set by default to "vt200" or "vt300". Without any modifications to your
"vedinit.p" file, VED will use the termcap entry for the VT200/300 to
configure itself for the terminal. This should work quite sufficiently
for most purposes, even if the terminal window is a non-standard size.
The only deficiency with this setup is that VED won't readjust itself to
any subsequent change in window size: you must use the DXTERM setup
described above in order to enable this feature.


-- Notes for VMS Users ------------------------------------------------

On VMS systems, VED always uses VEDTERMINALSELECT to determine
automatically the type of terminal in use. The default value of
VEDTERMINALSELECT does not include an entry for DXTERM, so without any
modifications to your "vedinit.p" file the terminal will be recognised
as a standard VT220-type terminal. This will work sufficiently provided
that the terminal window is a standard size (24 rows x 80 columns); if
you want to use different-sized windows you should add the DXTERM entry
to VEDTERMINALSELECT as described above.
