HELP V55 and AUTOV55 A. Sloman June 1985

    lib v55;

This command will load a library file to convert VED to work with the
Visual 55 VDU.

A preliminary set of mappings from keys to functions has been
implemented. This may be revised in the light of comments from users.
For exact information on the current state of the package do

    SHOWLIB * V55

The package includes a procedure ved_v55 which, if invoked, re-programs
the function keys on the Visual 55 in the manner required for this
package. This will change F1 to F12 each to generate a sequence of the
form:

        <ESC> ? <character>

Since the unshifted programmable function keys F1 to F12 are
re-programmed to be totally different from the other keys and the keys
used on the Visual 200, users who are accustomed to typing some of the
V200 escape sequences directly, or use them in their procedures may
still do so.

The keys may be re-programmed to their normal setting by giving the
command:

    lib setv55keys.

The basic mode of operation is very similar to the use of the VISUAL200
terminal with VED. Function Key mappings are described at the end of
this file.

For an introduction to using the VISUAL 200 terminal see

TEACH * TEACH, *VED, *MOREVED, *VEDPOP

-- AUTOMATIC RECOGNITION OF VISUAL 55 ---------------------------------------
                                            Tom Khabaza 12th October 1984
                                            Modified A. Sloman March 1985

    lib autov55;

This library file helps you keep sane if you sometimes use a Visual 200
VDU and sometimes a Visual 55 on the same terminal port.

A Visual 55 (V55) terminal, when emulating a Visual 200/210 produces the
same terminal ID code as the Visual 200 (V200), which is the same as the
VT52. So this code cannot be used to identify it as a V55.

Since the V55 requires a different VED configuration from the V200, as
provided by LIB V55, you can use LIB AUTOV55 to ensure that VED will
detect that a V55 is being used, and automatically load LIB V55 when
starting up.

LIB AUTOV55 is used by putting the line:

    uses autov55;

in your vedinit.p file.

-- How AUTOV55 works ---------------------------------------------------

Lib autov55 uses the V55's "answerback" facility to distinguish it from
a V200, since this can be used to transmit a message distinct from the
terminal ID. (The 'answerback' is transmitted in response to CTRL-E.)
The V55 needs to be programmed to respond appropriatly. This
programming need be done only once for a new V55, since the answerback
sequence can be stored permanently in the terminal's non-volatile
memory.

The following key sequence programs the V55:

    <SET UP> <shift A> / <ESC> [ 5 5 V / <shift S>

This programs the V55 to send the string '\^[[55V' as its 'answerback',
and leaves the terminal in normal (non-setup) mode.

To see how LIB AUTOV55 works, do SHOWLIB * AUTOV55.

LIB AUTOV55 allows users to define two procedures
    - vedv55init - to be run if terminal is recognised as a V55
The default version merely loads lib v55. You could, for instance
make it restore a saved image with lib v55 and other facilities
        loaded. (See HELP * INITIAL)
    - vedvt52default - to be run if the terminal is not recognised - so it's
        a different vt52 emulator, e.g. V200, or some other.
The default version does nothing, which is adequate for a V200,
though you could define it to compile a file which alters default
settings for a V200, or restores a saved image, etc.

-- V55 FUNCTION KEYS --------------------------------------------------------

The rest of this file indicates the use of special keys on the VISUAL55.
For a summary which may be printed out see HELP *V55KEYS

THE KEYPAD AND FUNCTION KEYS ON A VISUAL 55 TERMINAL
                    =======================================

The function keys are on the top row. The keypad keys are on the right.

The NUMERIC keypad keys work as on the Visual 200 - moving the cursor in
8 directions, except for key 5, which puts the cursor on the middle of
the current line.

Remaining keypad keys:
ENTER key -- go to command line, and clear it
"-" key -- redo command on command line
"'" key -- switch between command line and edit window
"0" key -- move cursor a word to left
"." key -- move cursor a word to right

-- ARROW AND 'HOME' KEYS --------------------------------------------------

The HOME key is always followed by another key. Pressing it twice will
cause the screen to be refreshed. The following table shows how it
affects the arrow keys and what they do on their own.

  ARROW keys: HOME
left right up down KEY Ignore AUX and XMIT
        _____________________________________________
  with | TEXT | SCREEN | TOP OF | END OF | REFRESH|
  HOME | LEFT | RIGHT | FILE | FILE | WINDOW |
        |--------|--------|--------|--------|--------|
        | SCREEN | TEXT | SCREEN | SCREEN |NOTHING |
        |__LEFT__|_RIGHT__|___UP___|__DOWN__|________|

The SCREEN LEFT button moves the cursor to the left of the SCREEN, but
the TEXT RIGHT button moves to the right of the TEXT, on the current
line.

The arrow keys may also be modified by preceding them with ESC. (This is
provisional, and may be changed.) ESC then left arrow key inserts a line
above current line; ESC right arrow inserts a line below.

ESC up arrow moves the marked range (see below) to immediately above
current line. ESC down arrow moves it below current line (duplicating
key F9).

--KEYPAD KEYS ---------------------------------------------------------

These move the cursor in the direction indicated. If the FUNCTION key is
pressed simultaneously, some of the keys cause bigger cursor moves,
namely 1,2,3,4,6,7,8. Key 5 may be used with FUNCTION to cause a bigger
movement UP the window.
                  ________________________________________

                  | LEFT | | RIGHT | |
                  |________|________|________| |
                  | 0 DELETE WD LEFT|.D WD RT| ENTER |

                  | MOVE WORD LEFT|MV WD RT| MODE |
                  |_________________|________|___________|

Where a rectangle has two entries, the UPPER is the result of preceding
the key with ESC. E.g. the "-" keypad key on its own will re-do the last
ENTER command. If preceded by ESC it will mark the current line as the
first of the marked range. (See HELP * MARK for more information).

Similarly, the "," keypad key will either change mode, (i.e. alternately
put the cursor on the command line, or move it back into the edit
window), or, if preceded by ESC will make the current line the last of
the marked range. (The last two ESC key facilities duplicate function
keys F7 and F8, and may be removed.)

The ENTER key causes the command line to be cleared, and the cursor left
on the command line.

The keypad '0' key moves the cursor left one word, '.' moves it right
one word. However if preceded by ESC, the word to left or to right is
deleted.

NB: ESC v on the V200 VDU causes the screen to be refreshed. This
sequence is taken over by a key on V55, so to refresh screen press HOME
twice.

-- USING 'HOME' TO MODIFY KEYPAD KEYS ---------------------------------

HOME 8 - move cursor up a third of a window, then move the
window down the file until the cursor is in the middle of the
        window.
HOME 5 - move the window up or down until the current cursor line
        is in the middle.
HOME 2 - move cursor down a third of a window, then move the window
up the file until the cursor is in the middle of the window.

-- OTHER SPECIAL KEYS ----------------------------------------------

The ESC key is used to precede certain special sequences, as above. The
TAB key inserts a tab into the file. SHIFT TAB switches 'hard tab' mode
on and off. (Only relevant if * VEDNOTABS is false.)

BACK-SPACE moves cursor left one space.
ESC BACK-SPACE scrolls the 'other' file up one window
DEL delete character to left of cursor
LINE-FEED move to beginning of next line of file
ESC LINE-FEED scroll the 'other' file down one window

-- FUNCTION KEYS ON TOP ROW: --------------------------------------------

If pressed alone:

F1 = delete character under cursor
F2 = delete line to left of cursor
F3 = delete whole of current line
F4 = delete line to right of cursor (including character under cursor)

F10 = push current position onto position stack
F11 = Justify current paragraph, or tidy current procedure.
F12 = insert new blank line above current line

The function keys send different codes if pressed with SHIFT, or with
CTRL or with the 'FUNCTION' key, or with SHIFT and CTRL. The following
settings are provisional and liable to change.

CTRL F1 = swap two characters to left of cursor (ved_sw)
CTRL F2 = re-insert last word or part line deleted
CTRL F3 = re-insert last line deleted (above current line)
CTRL F4 = re-insert last word or part lne deleted
CTRL F5 = re-insert last word or part lne deleted
CTRL F6 = re-insert last word or part lne deleted
CTRL F7 = go to beginning of marked range
CTRL F8 = go to end of marked range
CTRL F9 = Copy marked range to after current line
CTRL F10= POP position stack - move cursor.
    CTRL F11= ved_fill(). Text-justify marked range.
CTRL F12= insert line below current line

    CTRL-SHIFT F1 = Re-program keys on visual 55 to suit VED
    CTRL-SHIFT F3 = CLEAR current file.
CTRL-SHIFT F4 = Delete to end of current file.
CTRL-SHIFT F5 = swap the two words to left of cursor
CTRL-SHIFT F6 = swap the two words to right of cursor
CTRL-SHIFT F7 = transcribe marked range into current file (ved_ti)
CTRL-SHIFT F8 = move marked range out of current file (ved_mo)
CTRL-SHIFT F9 = move marked range into current file (ved_mi)
    CTRL-SHIFT F10 = clear the position stack
CTRL-SHIFT F11 = TIDY the marked range, i.e. format as program.
    CTRL-SHIFT F12 = unassigned

SHIFT-F5 = invoke * VEDFILESELECT, to see names of current files and
                move to one.
SHIFT-F7 = Transcribe marked range IN from other file : (ved_ti)
SHIFT-F8 = Find helpfile for word to right of cursor(= ESC H).
SHIFT-F10 = Exchange current position with top of position stack.
    SHIFT-F11 = justify and right-align current paragraph (ved_jjp).
SHIFT-F12 = rotate files in the buffer (ved_rb).

The next sequence indicates what happens if a function key on the top
row is pressed while the FUNCTION key at the bottom is held down.

FUNCTION-F4 = current current line to lower case (ved_lcl).
FUNCTION-F5 = current current word to upper case (ved_ucw).
FUNCTION-F6 = current current word to lower case (ved_lcw).
FUNCTION-F9 = duplicate the current line.
FUNCTION-F12= switch static mode on or off.

--- OTHER KEY SEQUENCES ----------------------------------------------

There are alternatives to using the function keys. Many of the
operations can be performed equivalently by typing control characters or
key sequences.

You can find which procedure is currently mapped onto a key or key
sequence by VED if you give the command
    <ENTER> hk

This will ask you to press the key or key sequence. If there is a
corresponding procedure its name will be printed on the command line. If
nothing is printed then you have started the beginning of a key sequence
which is not complete. You can try completing the sequence in various
ways.

-- CONTROL CHARACTERS ----------------------------------------------------

Some of the VED functions can be achieved by control characters, i.e.
hold down the CTRL button and press a key. (CTRL-A is represented below
as ^A)

^A Move to beginning of line. VEDSCREENLEFT
^B ^B Move back a word. VEDWORDLEFT (N.B. single ^B will not work.)
    ^C Interrupt
^D Load marked range (for program files). VED_LMR. (See HELP LMR)
^E Delete to end of line. VEDCLEARTAIL
^F Move forward a word. VEDWORDRIGHT
^G Like CHANGE mode key. VEDSTATUSSWITCH
^H Back space. Like BS key. Move cursor left one character. VEDCHARLEFT
^I TAB, like TAB key. Insert suitable number of spaces, or tabs,
depending whether VEDNOTABS is true or false See HELP *VEDNOTABS
^J Like LF button. Move to beginning of next line. VEDNEXTLINE.
(Position of cursor is controlled by VEDLEFTMARGIN.)
^K Move to top of screen. VEDSCREENUP
^L Move to bottom of screen. VEDSCREENDOWN
^M Same as RETURN. Insert new line
^N Change case of character under cursor, from upper to lower or
        vice versa VEDCHANGECASE

^W Delete Word to left of cursor. VEDWORDLEFTDELETE
^X VMS turns this into ^U
^Y Interrupt and abort POP11. You'll lose your work.
^Z Move to right of current line. VEDTEXTRIGHT
(NOT available to Unix users who use ^Z as the suspend
             character)
    ^] Delete current line. VEDLINEDELETE
^_ (CTRL and DEL button) REDO last command. VEDREDOCOMMAND
^^ (CTRL and "^" button). Not used yet
^\ (CTRL and "\"). Not used yet
^@ Null character. Ignored by VED because some terminals send spurious
        nulls.

-- ESCAPE SEQUENCES -----------------------------------------------------

Several commands may be given by typing the <ESC> key followed by
another key. These look arbitrary. The sequences are in fact mostly
those produced by function keys. But you can also type them directly
yourself. Note that the upper case letters, e.g. <ESC> H need the SHIFT
key to be pressed.

Some of the sequences marked 'unused' may be used by your keyboard by
the time you read this. You can always check with the ENTER HK command,
as described above.

-- <ESC> followed by a letter -----------------------------------------------

Some of these look very arbitary. That is because they are sequences
which have been chosen to fit function keys on the V55.
