    endswitchon

SWITCHON is a macro which permits abbreviation of multi-branch
conditional statements where part of the condition is the same for all
branches. It is used with  the words THEN, ELSE, CASE, ORCASE, ANDCASE,
NOTCASE, ANDNOTCASE, ORNOTCASE and ENDSWITCHON. The format is shown by
the above sequence, which will expand to a multi-branch conditional
statement. Each CASE or NOTCASE clause (except the first) will turn into
an ELSEIF clause.

A start-condition is an incomplete expression which when completed by
the end-conditions in the CASE clauses, forms a complete boolean
expression. For example, the start-condition HD(LIST) in the line

    switchon hd(list)

could be completed by any of the following end-conditions:

    = [a b c]
    matches [a ??x]
    matches [??x:5]
    isin goodlists
    .isword
    > 5

etc. Alternatively, the operator (=, MATCHES etc.) could be part of the
start-condition, and each end-condition would then be just an operand.

Each CASE clause must start with

    case <end-condition>
or
    notcase <end-condition>

followed by

    <any number of ANDCASE or ORCASE or ANDNOTCASE or ORNOTCASE conditions>

followed by

    then <imperative sequence>

A NOTCASE clause starts with NOTCASE instead of CASE, but is otherwise
like a CASE clause.

An ANDCASE condition is

    andcase <end-condition>

An ORCASE condition is

    orcase <end-condition>

similarly ANDNOTCASE and ORNOTCASE conditions. The latter two, however,
produce negated versions of the complete conditions.

The use of "." as in this example is probably best avoided.

Note, if a complex expression is used after SWITCHON then there is no
attempt to optimise and replace this by a variable to prevent repeated
evaluation. This is left to the user. Another example,  derived from
TEACH ELIZA:
